There’s our beloved, complicated Don, casually smoking a cigarette as the flood waters rise. And, in a Mad Men first, that’s not a metaphor. Upon extreme close-up (enhance!), he’s also almost scowling, with just the slightest squint. Aw, cheer up, Don — except don’t, actually, because your inability to experience joy is sort of a calling card of this series. The poster reminds me a little of Gregory Crewdson’s “Twilight” photos, a combination of doom and desire, both evocative and unsettling. If that’s not a spot-on description of Don Draper, what is?

Mad Men Season 3 Kicks Off Aug 16 @ 10:00 PM on AMC

I’ve really been digging this “little” show called Mad Men, and in case you didn’t know the third season is about to kick-off mid August. I so can’t wait!

AMC has announced that it will be premiering the third season of Mad Men on Sun., Aug. 16 at 10PM ET | 9PM C. The premiere will be presented with limited commercial interruptions.

Leading up to the new season will be a Season 2 marathon starting Mon., Aug. 10, from 7AM to 8PM EST. Also, starting today (Jun. 10), Season 1 of Mad Men is available On Demand in both standard and high definition. Season 2 will be available starting Mon., Jul. 20.

Over the past few months I have been involved in a new social network known as MakeFive. It’s a really interesting concept which allows you to create your own top 5 lists, then have other people compare, share, and even contribute their thoughts to the lists. It can be extremely addictive, and really fun coming up with these lists. Each month is a contest, where the people with the most/best/interesting opinions win prizes like ipods and t-shirts. Being a two-time winner, I was lucky enough to receive a couple shirts.

One of the topics featured on MakeFive was to show off the coveted t-shirt given to the winners of each month’s competition. Being a past winner, I submitted a photo of Ethan (my son) and I sporting our new threads, and to my delight we were recently featured on the MakeFive blog. Pretty sweet!

Anton Chigurh: Anywhere not in your pocket. Where it’ll get mixed in with the others and become just a coin. Which it is.

What a great scene. This has got to be one of my all time favourite dialogues between two characters witnessed in a movie. It has been a long time coming too. The last great conversation between characters (that I can think of off the top of my head…) would have to of been in Pulp Fiction. The acting superb, great storyline, and the way it was directed (thank-you Coen Brothers!) was done beautifully. Sure it’s not a perfect movie - it does have flaws. But, I must say that I was nice surprise. I really wanted to see this movie when it initially came out to theatres - never got around to it. Finally, it comes out on DVD and going into it I didn’t really have any expectations.

With all that said, I highly recommend seeing this film. I will caution, not for the faint of heart. It does get a little graphic and gritty at times, but I think that’s one of the reasons I was attracted to it in the first place. The entire film comes across as authentic and true. Without giving away too much of the premise, you’re dealing with very real people put in very crummy situations based on decisions they made. It doesn’t get more real than that - and that is why it works.
